Rojava Film Commune, Berfîn
1h13m, 2019
Berfîn is a young female guerrilla fighter forced to grow up fast during the Kurdistan war. As she tries to adapt to her new life in the mountains, she dives deep into her inner world, seeking answers about her past. House raids, departures with no return, the dead in the village square, the endless whispering of the elders, and a mother who left her behind… Torn between her personal loss and the war in her country, Berfîn takes to the road to persuade her mother and to reinstate her memories. Berfîn is a story of quest, war, and longing; love, loss, and struggle.
The screening is organized as part of Forms of Freedom, an exhibition of the works of the Rojava Film Commune, on view at e-flux through April 4, 2020 and curated by iLiana Fokianaki.
The Rojava Film Commune (Komîna Fîlm a Rojava) is a collective established in 2015 by local filmmakers and supporters of the revolution in Rojava in northern Syria, with a focus on production, education, and showcasing cinema. The Commune organizes the Rojava Film Academy for young filmmakers, scriptwriters, editors, and other film professionals in the region, and the Rojava International Film Festival aimed at bringing cinema to the local audience, as well as creating opportunities for local filmmakers, and bridges with international filmmakers. Their films have been shown in venues worldwide, most recently at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
