After almost 50 editions, the Prize of the Böttcherstraße—one of the most important prizes for contemporary art in Germany—has been given a new name and is now called the Pauli-Prize, in honour of Gustav Pauli, the first director of the Kunsthalle Bremen. The prize endowed with 30,000 euros will be awarded for the 49th time this year. Made possible by the Donors’ Circle for the Pauli-Prize—a group of committed members of the Kunstverein in Bremen as well as the Senator for Culture and the Sparkasse Bremen—it honours artists living in the German-speaking world for their contribution to contemporary art. Six curators, the director of the Kunsthalle Bremen and the Donors’ Circle have independently nominated the eight artists whose works will be shown together in the exhibition. In the course of the exhibition, a renowned five-member jury will select the winner.
In the past years, winners have included Karimah Ashadu (2022), Ulrike Müller (2020), Arne Schmitt (2018), Emeka Ogboh (2016), Nina Beier (2014), Daniel Knorr (2012), Thea Djordjadze (2009), Ulla von Brandenburg (2007), Clemens von Wedemeyer (2005), Tino Sehgal (2003), Olafur Eliasson (1997) and Wolfgang Tillmans (1995).
